The city sits on SH 105 East, east of Conroe and north-northeast of our base in Spring. Our standard clearing scope includes grubbing: we pull the stumps and root mats along with the trees and brush. The town was apparently named after a 1912 community confrontation at its only church. A boy there reportedly said he would "cut around the corner and shoot through the bushes," and it stuck. Population was first reported in the mid-1970s, at fifty residents. By 1980 the incorporated town reported 809 residents and had built a new city hall. The count was 1,158 in 2000 and 1,087 at the 2020 census. The city covers about 2.7 square miles of land.

We take jobs inside the city limits and on tracts out along SH 105 East. USGS stream maps show the east and west forks of Crystal Creek near town, with Caney Creek and McRae Creek. Our compact track loader runs a forestry mulching head for brush and small trees. A mini excavator pulls stumps and root mats where a house or driveway will go. Haul-off leaves in our trucks and roll-off containers. MTM is fully insured, and every estimate is free.

Local Conditions in Cut and Shoot

Land Clearing Built for Cut and Shoot Ground

Jurisdiction comes first here, and city water service does not prove city land. The city's water department serves a wide area outside its limits. Montgomery County points you to the Montgomery Central Appraisal District. A city listed under taxing units means that city has jurisdiction. Inside the limits, the city requires permits for new homes and commercial buildings, plus commercial remodels and add-ons. Its posted forms cover buildings and manufactured homes, and none is a clearing permit. Outside the limits, county rules count clearing, grading and filling as development. The county's permitting office, part of Environmental Health, handles the development permit, and Floodplain Administration takes flood questions. Around the town center, USDA maps somewhat poorly drained Splendora fine sandy loam on about a quarter of the ground. Conroe and Lilbert loamy fine sands add more than a third. About an eighth of the ground is mapped as frequently flooded. About 44 percent is somewhat poorly drained or wetter. Where USDA names a slope for these soils, it runs 0 to 5 percent. USDA soil records rate the ground around town for loblolly and shortleaf pine, sweetgum and water oak.

Cut and Shoot FAQs

Land Clearing in Cut and Shoot: Common Questions

Local answers on permits, cost, and what to expect on Cut and Shoot property.

Call (281) 432-7360

How much does land clearing cost in Cut and Shoot?
The price follows the land, so your number comes from a free estimate. Tree size and stump count set most of the machine time. Wet ground adds to it, and much of the soil around town is mapped somewhat poorly drained or wetter. A small lot inside the city is a lighter job than wooded acreage out on SH 105 East.
Do I need a permit to clear land in Cut and Shoot, TX?
It depends on where the land sits. Inside the city limits, the city permits new homes and commercial buildings, and its posted forms include no clearing permit. Outside them, Montgomery County counts clearing as development under its permit rules. Checking the exemptions is up to you, the county says. We look at what your parcel needs during the free estimate. Our county clearing permit guide covers the exemptions.
How do I know if my land is inside the Cut and Shoot city limits?
Your appraisal record answers it. City water reaches well past the city limits, so a water bill can mislead. Montgomery County sends you to the Montgomery Central Appraisal District. If a city shows under taxing units on your record, that city has jurisdiction. The city office also takes the question during normal business hours.
Can you clear wet ground near Crystal Creek or Caney Creek?
Yes, once we see where the low ground sits on your tract. Around the town center, about an eighth of the soil is mapped as frequently flooded. Outside the city limits, Montgomery County sends floodplain questions to its Floodplain Administration. For pond banks and ditches, a remote-controlled compact machine works where a bigger machine cannot go. Getting the cleared ground ready for a house is part of site preparation.
Can I burn the brush after clearing land in Cut and Shoot?
Ask before you light anything. As of October 2026, the city's FAQ said no burning of trash and leaves inside the limits. The reason given was dry conditions in the county. It sends burn questions to the Montgomery County Fire Marshal. Forestry mulching grinds brush into mulch where it stands, so no burn pile is needed. Anything you want gone leaves in our trucks and roll-off containers.
